Building credibility doesn’t happen overnight; it takes time and effort, but it’s well worth it. Credibility, trust, and a good reputation, established early, can follow you for the rest of your career. Follow these four tips to start your career off right:

1. Follow through             

While Gen Y is a generation of multi-taskers, we have occasionally been accused of being slightly (or very, depending on who you talk to) ADD. Prove this notion wrong by making sure to follow through on all promises, projects, and assignments. While it’s more than okay — actually, encouraged in today’s workplace — to multitask, make sure you stay focused and meet your deadlines. Following through on your tasks will show your coworkers that you are trustworthy and reliable.

2. Add value

One of the best ways to build your credibility and reputation is to add value. If you can create tangible, measurable results through your work, you will be adding value to your company and become an indispensable member of the team. Your reputation will be one of someone who can accomplish things in the workplace and not only get them done, but make a difference.

3. Communicate

Communication is essential in any relationship — especially your relationships in the workplace. Be open, honest and transparent in your communication with others. Always tell the truth, ask questions, and seek help if you need it; there is no problem with a professional at any level asking for help or clarification. Better to ask than to guess and get it wrong. Being able to communicate and take direction will solidify your credibility and your reputation as someone who isn’t afraid of a little conversation — even if that conversation involves critique.

4. Be professional

Your professionalism is probably part of what got you your job in the first place; don’t stop now! Establishing your professionalism from the get-go is a surefire way to build your trust and credibility in the workplace. Being professional with your dress, talk, and actions will garner respect from your coworkers and will pave your way to future professionalism in your career. Start good habits early
